Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir (b. 1942) is a prominent economist, civil servant, writer, and political leader in Bangladesh. He is also a controversial figure Bangladeshi politics. His refusal as a civil servant to obey orders after BNP (a center-right political party) installed itself in power through one-sided elections in 1996 was a turning point in Bangladesh’s political history.
Imprisonment and Torture
After BNP was elected to power in 2001, the party decided to seek revenge for Dr. Alamgir’s role in bringing down the government in 1996. Dr. Alamgir was arrested in 2002 and detained without charges.
On July 13, 2009, the Bangladesh High Court delivered a landmark verdict to overturn Dr. Alamgir’s 13-year imprisonment conviction by a special tribunal.
