The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan is an independent non governmental organisation registered under the law. It is non-polilical and non-proflt-making. Its maln omce Is in lahore. It started functionlng in 1987. The highest organ of HRCP is the general body comprising all members. The general body meets at least once every year.Executive authority of the organisation vests In the Councll elected every three years. The Councll elects the organlsation s office-bearers
Chairman not more than five Vice-chairmen a Secretary General and a Treasure. No office holder in government or a political party (at the natlonal or provinclal level) can be an office-bearer of HRCP. The organisatlon has been headed since its inceptlon by a former ludge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan Mr. Dorab Patel. Ms. Asma Jahangir has been the Secretary General.
The Secretariat In Lahore is headed by its Director Mr. I. A. Rehman. Mr.Minhai Barnais Incharge of the Karachi office. Besides monitoring human rights violatlons and seeking redress through publlc campaigns lobbying and intervention in courts HRCP organises seminars workshops and fact-finding missions. It also issues a quarterly Newsletter which comes out in January April July and October.

The HRCP is a key organisation as far as human rights initiatives in Pakistan go
