KEEPING PRAFUL BIDWAI’S LEGACY ALIVE

Praful Bidwai, noted Indian journalist and author, who passed away in June 2015, was able to combine the qualities of being a public intellectual and activist with a rare distinction. For his many friends, admirers and readers, his premature death is a gap that is hard to fill. They continue to miss his incisive journalistic and scholarly observations on contemporary concerns, both in India and the world. His much acclaimed last book, ‘The Phoenix Moment’, is a magisterial look at the challenges confronting the Indian Left.

We need to work together to keep that legacy alive and it is in that spirit that it has been decided to institute a Memorial Fund in his memory which will undertake, among other interventions, to institute an annual prize to recognize a promising scholar-journalist from the region, whose work is marked by a zest for investigation, a commitment to social justice and a capacity for critical analysis.

In order to help actualize the Memorial Fund, we urge you to do either of the following:

1. You can visit https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-praful-bidwai-memorial-trust/x/11304634#/ and contribute generously. Contributions can be made in your local currencies from credit cards. Contributors will be given updates on the progress of this intervention. The campaign will run until 5 January.

2. Alternatively, many in India may prefer to send an amount in Rupees in which case you can a) write out a cheque made out in the name of ‘PEACE-CNDP’ and send it for depositing to the following address: PEACE/CNDP Office, 124 A/6 Katwaria Sarai, New Delhi 110016. b) If you wish you can also make a direct bank transfer to the following account number, name, and bank branch:

Account Name: PEACE-CNDP
Account Number: 441900431
IFSC Code: IDIB000S097
Bank Name: Indian Bank
Bank Branch: Saket, New Delhi 110017.

Please note that in the IFSC code it is ‘S’ and not 5.

Praful was a founding member of CNDP (Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace), India and all such contributions by his well wishers both in India and abroad will be used to keep his legacy alive.
