The ’Make in India’ Gambit - Feb 2016 briefing by India Study Group

Overshadowed by the JNU controversy, February 13th - 18th, 2016 was nonetheless meant to be ’Make in India’ week. So one should perhaps not forget to ask: Is ’Make in India’ going to work?

In this briefing, we explore the challenges that lie before this initiative, and whether its bundle of policies are likely to tackle them. It seems not.

It rather appears that Make in India may lead to a worsening of India’s Economy, by exacerbating some of its basic structural problems. These include poor infrastructure & public services, particularly health care and education as it impacts the workforce; and the very low income levels and consequent low purchasing power of most Indians, resulting in weaker domestic demand.
