Garment workers one day Karnataka state wide strike

The Garment Workers Union Bangalore has planned one day Karnataka state wide strike on 5th of November 2008. Above one million workers will stop work on 5th of November in Bangalore city, Bangalore rural, Ramanagara District, Kolar, Tumkur and Hassan districts.

Major demands are as follows:

1) The minimum wage of Garment workers should be fixed for Rs. 6,000/- Per month and there should be a yearly increase of 10%. Employers should consider service as main criteria in increments.
 2) Basic infrastructure should be developed in all Industrial areas where Garment manufacturing units centralized.
 3) All employers should recognize the trade unions in their units.
 4) Should take necessity steps to prevent the atrocities on workers specially women workers.
 5) Buying companies should increase the present rates on their orders.
 6) Government should initiate a high power committee to monitor the production target in the garment sector.
 7) Government should provide housing for garment workers.
 8) Government should provide skill based trainings for garment workers and unemployed youth.
 9) Employers should implement the provisions of factories act 1948 to ensure the safe work place.

Workers will stop the work on 5th of November and do a symbolic protest in front of Mahathma Gandhi Statue in M G road. Memorandums will be submitted to the chief minister of Karnataka and other ministers.
