On 15th August 2014, the Prime Minister announced the demise of the Planning Commission. Economists and others have since then written its obituaries. I recognize many of its achievements and will avoid repeating them. Instead, I will present two glaring failures of the Planning Commission: (a) in the economic allocation of critical economic resources, and (b) by the unplanned and inadequate provision for socio-economic infrastructure, both of which have cost heavily in political, economic and social terms. Serious thought needs to be given to these in the emerging situation, in whatever functional means replace the Planning Commission.
