Dear Professor Dinesh Singh

We are forwarding a letter signed by more than 4000 intellectuals from all over the world protesting against the withdrawal of Professor Ramanujan’s celebrated essay ’Three Hundred Ramayanas’ from the reading list of one of the under graduate courses of Delhi University. This action by the Academic Council has shocked and dismayed all those who see university as a place of learning, a space that allows a free exchange of ideas, and helps shape critical minds. By repressing ideas we destroy the very basis of this ideal.

As you will notice the letter has been signed by many of the greatest authorities on Indian culture and civilization – Sanskritists, intellectuals who have spent a lifetime translating and writing on the Indian Epics, and historians who have written extensively on Indian religions. Many of them are now organizing protests within their universities against this new culture of banning ideas, censoring texts, policing intellectuals. It is sad that in all their protests and meetings the University of Delhi – a respected and hallowed institution – is now the focus of enraged attacks. Everywhere the act of the Academic Council is being seen as a capitulation to the forces of Hindutva.

We are certain you are aware of the articles that have been published and the meetings that are being organized on the issue – the ’Ramanujan Affair’ as it is being presently termed. But I am sending you some of the links to these essays, just in case you have missed them. You will notice that one unintended consequence of your Academic Council action has been to spark off protests against the OUP – a protest that was long overdue.

We hope you will act in ways that restores the prestige of the University and assures intellectuals that Delhi University will not repress freedom to express ideas, that it will not deny its students the right to read texts that disturbs the unitarian vision of sectarian forces. This cannot be done without reinstating the essay in the reading list.

The letter of protest:

We express our profound shock that the Delhi University Academic Council has decided to drop A.K. Ramanujan’s highly acclaimed essay on many Ramayanas from the reading list of one of the B.A. courses. Professor Ramanujan is recognized all over the world as one of the most eminent authorities on pre-modern literature and culture. The essay ‘Three Hundred Ramayanas: Five Examples and Three Thoughts’ shows in rich detail how Indian culture is constituted of a multiplicity of traditions, how it speaks with many voices. It is an essay that all young people, not just history students, ought to read. To delete it from the syllabus is an act that is deeply disturbing, an instance of thought policing. Such a measure will only encourage sectarian groups to try and prevent intellectuals from expressing their ideas freely. The action of the Vice Chancellor and the Academic council is particularly distressing since it overrules the majority opinion of the Expert Committee that was set up (under the direction of the Supreme Court) to look into the controversy.

The letter has been signed by over 4300 intellectuals. This is a short list of some of the signatories to the letter
