List of events & activities being held on October 2, 2001 Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday - Global Vigil for Peace


New Delhi (India): Silent PeaceVigil on October 2, at Raj Ghat from 4 to 5 pm (see details)

Peshawar (Pakistan): The event will be held at 10:30 am on October 2, 2001 at the new Peshawar Press Club and the rally will be organised just outside the press club with banners, placards, white flags and a signature campaign for peace. There is a possibility of releasing a dozen or so pigeons as a symbolic gesture. A joint press statement will also be prepared at the end. The main speakers will be Mr. Afrasiab Khattak and Dr. Sarfraz. The day will be observed through out the world with similar activities...since Peshawar might be in the centre of all the force, devastation and cross border action we thought a rather stronger voice for Peace needs to be raised at this end.

Princeton (USA) (an event is planned on October 2, details later)

Nagpur (India): an hourís silent sit in demonstration against violence on 2nd of October, at 11.00 a.m. near Mahatma Gandhiís Statue, Variety Square, Nagpur.The meeting ended with all the members standing in silence to pay homage to the victims of 11th September terrorist attack.

Calcutta (India): We will collect signatures from people on 2nd October at 4.00 p.m. at the Park Circus Maidan opposite Lady Brabourne College. We will have posters on the issue and light candles for peace. (Swayam)

Chennai (India) Demonstration at Marina Beach being organised by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). The theme is again anti-Terrorism and anti-War. It will consist of a run for peace from the War Memorial to the Gandhi Statue starting at 4 pm and a public meeting and demonstration at Gandhi Statue starting at 5 pm.
