Agha Waqar Ahmad deserves a medal from the people of Pakistan for his great service to the nation. In a few short days, he has exposed just how far Pakistan has fallen into the pit of ignorance and self-delusion. No practical joker could have demonstrated more dramatically the true nature of our country’s political leaders, popular TV anchors and famed scientists.

Whether or not partition was bound to come, the plain truth is that the high command of Congress took scarcely any intelligent steps to avert it, and many crass ones likely to hasten it; and when it came, acted in a way that ensured it would take the cruellest form, with the worst human consequences. For even were a scission of the subcontinent foreordained by its deep culture, its manner was not. At the hour of division, the political cupidity of Congress, in collusion with the dregs of the viceregal line, not only inflicted enormous popular suffering, which certainly could have been avoided, but compounded it with a territorial greed that has poisoned India’s relations with its neighbour down to the nuclear stand-off today.

As if he has woken up from a deep slumber, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has questioned the atomic energy department’s decision not to exercise the right to recourse in the event of an accident at the Koodankulam plants. This simply means that the Russian government or their companies have no liability whatsoever for their technology and the equipment. The United States and France are also demanding such waivers. All these “Merchants of Venice” want to increase their profit at the cost of the Indian citizens’ life and wellbeing. But they would have no responsibility or accountability for their decrepit technology.

The Karnataka State is hit by drought. And the State Government of the BJP has found a brilliant solution by initiating steps to bring down rains from heavens by recourse to propitiating the gods. The Department of Revenue has issued a circular to 34,000 temples under its control to conduct ’abhishekha’, ’varuna mantra’, ’jalabhishekha’ and several other rituals. The circular says the government is "convinced" that it is necessary to conduct these rituals in view of the severe drought, and "for the welfare of people and cattle".
