Against the anti national decision to splinter the pioneer Defence Industry viz the 220 years old Indian Ordnance Factories under the Ministry of Defence into 7 non viable corporations and then to privatise the same taken by the Modi Government , the five Federations of Defence Civilian Employees since all the efforts taken by them to withdraw the decision taken in violation of all the previous agreements and settlements failed they had decided to proceed with an indefinite strike which was to commence from 26-7-2021 demanding to withdraw the Government decision in the interest of National security, Defence preparedness and the service life of 76,000 employees.

The Essential Defence Services Ordinance 2021 (EDSO) that was introduced by the Government of India late last night (Wednesday, 30 June 2021) is the most recent attack of the BJP government on the democratic right of workers to collective bargaining and their right to protest. The NTUI condemns this deplorable and undemocratic act of this government.

The sudden and unplanned lockdown imposed by the union government in March 2020 in the wake of pandemic had caused immense hardship to the informal sector workers. After much criticism and concern on its inaction, Supreme Court on 26.05.2020 took suo moto cognizance of “problems and miseries of the migrant labourers”. Later, several persons associated with people’s organisations and movements filed intervention applications in this writ. On 29th June, 2021 Supreme Court delivered its judgement after the matter was taken up again during the second wave of the pandemic.
