We, the undersigned, hereby express our grave concern over the recent press reports that ‘The Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill 2009’ is planned to be tabled in the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament and the UPA government is apparently bent upon rushing it through without holding fair and transparent public consultations, regardless of its profound consequences.

The Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research has welcomed the government’s move to repeal the Removal from Services (Special Powers) Ordinance 2000 and amend the Services Tribunal Act.

Nobel Peace Laureates Shirin Ebadi and Jody Williams - along with human rights experts Dr. Heisoo Shin (Korea) and Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn (Thailand) - today released the findings and recommendations developed during the International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women of Burma held this week in New York City.

The foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan have met, they have exchanged dossiers, and allegations against each other’s governments have been made once again. This is not surprising. But we must be grateful that the governments of the two countries have at least spoken to each other and have committed themselves to be in touch and keep the channels open.

When we ban the shared enjoyment of traditional festivals like Basant, we are only strengthening the extremists who have come to shape our national agenda
