Today marks the 7th anniversary of my friend Narendra Dhabholkar’s murder. The hostile right-wing reactionaries are still a constant in our lives. However, Narendra Dhabolkars’s murder was not in vain. The movement has been rejuvenated, younger people are joining in, and thankfully, a number of charlatans have been prosecuted under the Anti-Superstition Black- Magic Act in Maharashtra.

The assassination of the first President of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was unique and strategically plotted. It was the first coup assassination in South Asia. In the era of the Cold War, other progressive secular post-colonial leaders also met the same fate. Unlike other assassinations, Mujib was murdered in a heinous fashion along with his family and kin. Justice process was blocked. It was a planned shockwave of horror in a newly independent country which ensured an ideological tiling towards conservative nationhood and a tune-back to colonial-style economy.
