The Prime Minister had promised to bring legislation to set-up an independent Nuclear Safety Authority. This came after the widespread apprehensions about the safety of nuclear reactors in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. However, the Bill which has been introduced in the Lok Sabha – the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority Bill – goes contrary to the assurance and seeks to set-up a body which is captive to the government. The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) demands that the government scrap this Bill and bring fresh legislation to set up a genuinely independent nuclear safety regulatory authority.
