PAKISTAN’S first Nobel Laureate, Prof Abdus Salam, constantly lamented our failure to promote science. It is a pity that 18 years after his death, science in Pakistan continues to languish as the neglected stepchild of state and society. It never recovered from the severe blow it suffered under Ziaul Haq’s Islamisation and anti-education policies.

The All India Shiksha Sangharsh Yatra is being organisesd by All India Forum for Right to Education (AIFRTE) in association with a large number of democratic organisations active in the field of education from 2nd December to 4th December 2014 with a view to oppose commercialisation and communalisation of education.

Successive Indian governments’ failure to prosecute those most responsible for killings and other abuses during the 1984 anti-Sikh violence highlights India’s weak efforts to combat communal violence. The new Indian government should seek police reforms and to enact a law against communal violence that would hold public officials accountable for complicity and dereliction of duty.
