The country is burdened with some of the highest cancer rates in the region following the 12 years of US nuclear tests. Yet it is admirable that the Marshall Islanders in fact seek no compensation for themselves, but rather are determined to end the nuclear weapons threat for all humanity.

We are astounded to learn that the Supreme Court has rejected the review petition of Surinder Koli today, finding no error that could have persuaded them to review the earlier order of the court. In fact, the case was riddled with errors. It is a case that rests on confession alone, with little evidence pointing to Koli’s guilt. Indeed, the 164 CrPc statement which has become the basis of Koli’s conviction is clearly tutored and obtained under torture. It is a clear violation of established jurisprudence of evidentiary rules, which disallow the admission of confessions extracted through torture as evidence.

Sindh Labour Solidarity Committee has expressed serious concern over the new privatization policy of the present government and demanded the government to withdraw this policy to sell the valuable state-owned corporations, because this policy would ultimately be harmful to the workers livelihood rights.

Two individuals stand at opposite ends of the film-censorship spectrum in India: One a Bollywood filmmaker, Vishal Bhardwaj, who made Haider, and the other a young documentary filmmaker, Shubhradeep Chakravorty, who made En Dino Muzaffarnagar, a documentary on last year’s riots. Bhardwaj, who agreed to 41 cuts, was able to state in his film that the Indian army was responsible for the disappearance of Kashmiri men in 1995, blew up homes at will, tortured people in the most brutal way and let loose a counter-terrorism force that played havoc with Kashmiri society. He was also able to incorporate in his film another holy cow of a censorious society: incest.
