National Alliance of Anti-nuclear Movements (NAAM)
CHEEMENI DECLARATION
We, the anti-nuclear movements and activists assembled at the All India Anti Nuclear Convention at Cheemeni, Kasaragod, Kerala, from different parts of India resolve as follows :
1. Drawing strength and inspiration from the powerful anti-nuclear resistances across India over the past few decades, we resolve to intensify the National Alliance of Anti-Nuclear Movements for a Nuclear Free India.
2. We extend our solidarity with the Anti-Nuclear People’s Vigilance Committee of Cheemeni and demand that plans for establishing nuclear plants at Cheemeni or anywhere in Kerala be cancelled.
3. We also extend our solidarity to numerous other anti-nuclear struggles, anti-Uranium mining movements which are fighting to save the environment and future of the country.
4. We pay our homage to all the citizens killed in the Pahalgam terrorist attack and call for strict action against those responsible. We appeal both to Indian and Pakistani Governments to tackle terror, but resort to diplomatic dialogue and de-escalate tensions in the region and not nuclear aggression .
5. We call upon the Government of India to abandon its proposed plans to amend and dilute the Atomic Energy Act 1962 and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act 2010. We propose a nationwide campaign to ensure that the government refrains from these dangerous amendments.
6. We are firmly opposed to privatization of the Nuclear sector, massive budgetary allocations for R & D of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and the pursuit of nuclear expansionism.
7. We appeal to both the Government and the society at large, to understand the long-term adverse impacts of nuclear radiation on the ecology and human life and instead prioritize non - nuclear forms of renewable energy production that are decentralised, have least minimum ecological impacts and uphold the principles of social equity and financial sustenance of our country.
8. The NAAM commits itself to peaceful and democratic struggle, upholding the spirit of the Indian Constitution and striving for a socially and ecologically just and safe India for current and future generations.
