Violence is an unfortunate fact of life in Delhi University. That was bloodily emphasised on February 16 [1982] when Dilip Simeon, 32, history lecturer at Ramjas College, was savagely beaten up by six men on his way to work.

The very word “Burma” was once shorthand for a brutal military dictatorship, but things have now changed dramatically. Burma (or Myanmar) has come to be viewed as a country firmly committed to the establishment of a new reality, founded upon respect for human rights and the rule of law.

The fight against institutional communalism in India alerts us to a challenge bigger than merely inflicting electoral defeats on Hindu communal parties and organisations. Even if such parties are defeated electorally, institutional Hindu communalism remains pervasive in varying degrees in India’s Constitution, judiciary, civil services, electoral and parliamentary institutions, security forces, prisons, academia, media, corporate business, and even non-governmental organisations, it will continue as a social, cultural and politico-economic force to disadvantage the lives of minority communities in India

As a critic of the death penalty, I am as opposed to hanging Kodnani as I was to the execution of Memon.
