India: PUDR Statement on arrests and harassment of activists protesting against Kanhar Dam Project
30 July 2015Since 25 July 2015, hundreds of dalits and adivasis have started an indefinite dharna in Robertsgunj Tehsil, Sonebhadr, Uttar Pradesh till those members of the All India Union of Forest Working People (AIUFWP) are not released who have been arrested arbitrarily. In this context, PUDR condemns the ongoing attacks by the state police and land mafia against the protesters who have been agitating against the construction of the Kanhar Dam project in Sonebhadra district for the past seven months. The arrest of Roma Malik, Sukalo Panika, Gambheera Prasad, Pankaj Gautam, Laxman, and Ashrafi Yadav of the AIUFWP is the latest demonstration of such terror tactics.
